Estrogen has been severely blamed for breast cancer. A new research published in the recent issue of the Journal of American Medical Association seems to suggest otherwise. This study shows that estrogen-alone hormone therapy does not increase the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Researchers reached this conclusion by analyzing findings of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Estrogen-Alone Trial. ......

Two Treatments Similar In Breast Cancer

Results from a clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of the drugs paclitaxel and docetaxel, delivered over two different dosing schedules, showed that both drugs - regardless of the dosing schedules tested in this trial - provided similar benefits for women with stage II or III, operable breast cancer. However, more women treated with docetaxel than with paclitaxel experienced serious side effects from their therapy. The trial was led by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group in collaboration with the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG), and the Southwest Oncology Group. The National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, supported this Phase III randomized clinical trial. The results were presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium on December 8, 2005. ......

New Technology To Detect Breast Cancer

The 56-year-old woman was relieved: her mammogram showed no signs of breast cancer. Just two weeks later at a follow-up exam, a magnetic resonance image illuminated a glaring mass the size of a walnut. The tumor was malignant, and its detection demonstrated all too clearly the disparity between two imaging techniques - x-ray mammograms versus magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) -- that have opposing strengths and weaknesses. ......

Results From The NSABP Breast Cancer Prevention Trial

Scientists from the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) who conducted the landmark Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT), report a seven-year and final update of the trial results in the November 16, 2005, Journal of the National Cancer Institute*. In this final report, reductions in breast cancer incidence among participants taking tamoxifen were found to be very similar compared to those reported in 1998 when initial findings from the BCPT were released. The conclusion is supported by the observation that the incidence rate of breast cancer was relatively constant through seven years of follow-up among women who received tamoxifen and by the fact that the rate remained stable for at least two years beyond the time that women stopped taking the drug. The risks of stroke, deep-vein thrombosis, and cataracts -- possible side-effects of tamoxifen treatment -- were also similar to those reported previously. ......
